Carolina Breast Imaging Specialists (CBIS) today announced the availability of iCAD’s PowerLook Advanced Mammography Platform (AMP)®, a next generation, digital mammography platform to aid in the early detection of breast cancer, integrated with Mātakina’s Volpara® Volumetric Breast Density assessment software, an FDA-cleared technologic advancement providing clinicians with information regarding a patient’s breast density. The technology will be among the latest advancements incorporated into CBIS’s new advanced breast imaging and early detection facility, which opened late last year.
According to the American Cancer Society, about one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Additionally, various studies have shown that, compared with other women, those with dense breasts are two to six times as likely to develop breast cancer. Breast density also decreases the sensitivity of the mammogram and therefore may impact early detection. Volpara helps radiologists assess breast density more consistently, allowing them to identify women who might benefit from additional screening. Being able to diagnose dense breast tissue at the time of a mammogram also allows the patient to proceed with additional diagnostic testing immediately, rather than being called back for additional appointments.
PowerLook AMP is the first product of its kind to integrate Mātakina’s VolparaVolumetric Breast Density assessment software. PowerLook AMP’s Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system provides radiologists with the ability to better identify areas of concern in a mammography image, enabling them to efficiently detect cancer and determine the best course of action for the patient. Paired with Volpara’s breast density assessment software, the system helps radiologists identify patients who may be at greater risk for breast cancer based on density of the breast tissue. Women with dense breast tissue may benefit from additional screening modalities, like MRI, in addition to routine mammography.
“Our new facility is designed to provide our patients with the most current technological advancements, which includes advanced screening technologies that aid in the early detection of cancer,” said Dr. Bruce F. Schroeder, medical director at Carolina Breast Imaging Specialists and the region’s most experienced radiologist dedicated exclusively to imaging of breast diseases and early breast cancer detection. “Breast tissue density is a significant factor in the risk of breast cancer development and detection and the availability of PowerLook AMP with Volpara at our facility will take our commitment to providing personalized service to a new level, enabling even better detection in patients with dense breasts.”
PowerLook AMP—along with additional advancements designed to provide women with the highest level of care in the areas of Screening Mammography, Diagnostic Mammography, Breast Biopsy, Breast Ultrasound, and Bone Density Testing—will be showcased at a ribbon cutting ceremony taking place on November 15, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at CBIS’s new advanced breast imaging and early detection facility, located at 990 Johns Hopkins Drive.
