Wilson, NC Location | Carolina Breast Imaging Specialists

CBIS is the first facility in Wilson offering 3D Digital Screening Mammography and the only facility using the newest 3D technology from GE Healthcare which offers the lowest radiation dosage at the highest image resolution. CBIS has been exclusively performing 3D mammography since 2014 and has extensive experience with this new technology.

Our office has been designed to be the most comfortable, convenient and private.  Soft music, soothing colors and furnishings, easy parking and friendly staff have made our patients tell us “this is the nicest doctor’s office I have ever been to—I will be back next year!”

Why Choose CBIS for Your Breast Imaging, Ultrasound, or Mammogram?

The Practice exists only to serve in the mission of finding breast cancer at its earliest stages when it is easiest to cure. This is very uncommon. Most breast imaging services are performed by hospitals or multimodality radiology practices. Even if they have a dedicated breast imaging facility it is just one component of their business. Everything we do is in service of this singular mission.

The STAFF does nothing but breast imaging. They are dedicated to learning and providing just one service.

The DOCTORS are all (both) fellowship trained breast imaging specialists. We do nothing else. Specialists in breast imaging can achieve the lowest false positive rates (ours is around 5% whereas the national average is around 10-12%). At 5% we are able to find the cancers that can be found but do not call the others abnormal which results in unnecessary fear, radiation, and cost. In addition, when we decide something needs a biopsy it is more likely to be a true positive result. This means that we can avoid unnecessary biopsies in many women.  Many of the women who were told they needed a biopsy, after getting a second opinion by our specialists find that they did not need one AND many women who were told they were cancer-free ended up needing a biopsy and having cancer.

All our screening mammography is 3D. We feel very strongly that 3D mammography is the best you can get, so it’s all we do. Don’t worry if your insurance does not cover 3D mammography, we will not charge you any extra fee.

Services provided at the Wilson location:

  • We have FDA/MQSA certification to perform all of our services
  • We are certified as an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, which we received by meeting ACR’s high standards in all aspects of breast imaging.

The CBIS Advantage

  1. We were the first in Greenville and in Wilson to offer 3D mammography. Since 2014 we have performed 3D on every screening patient. Other practices still do some 3D and some 2D (often depending on ability to pay/insurance). We have never done that.
  2. We are the first (and still only) practice to use 3D screening ultrasound (ABUS) in the Eastern half of the state.
  3. We also are the only practice in the region using 3D CAD on our mammogram images.

All of these technological advantages mean that you receive more accurate imaging, helping to catch cancer earlier and identify non-cancerous lumps with less stress.

Spa-like dressing area at the Wilson CBIS location

What to expect when you come to Wilson for an appointment.

We pride ourselves on having a very non-medical, spa-like environment. Comfortable furnishings, hardwood floors, background music (not elevator music), soothing colors help you relax when getting ready for your appointment.  Private check-in areas. Each patient gets her own private dressing room, a cloth gown and a key to lock the room while she gets her exam. She doesn’t have to worry about outer clothing, purse, etc. There is a private (female only) interior waiting room for women in their gowns.

Do I need a referral for a screening mammogram?

No. You may schedule your own exam without any prescription or order from your health care provider

Do I need an appointment?

An appointment is recommended but walk-ins are accepted

What is a “screening” mammogram?

Screening mammograms are performed in women who have NO SYMPTOMS or complaints.  Generalized breast pain, breast implants, history of benign breast biopsy or breast cancer more than 5 years ago can all be done as screening exams.  Any other situation requires DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAPHY which is done in our Greenville location.

My previous mammograms are elsewhere, how do I transfer my films and reports?

Once you sign our information release we will get everything transferred for you. You can download our form here and then fax it back to us before your appointment so we have everything we need when you come. If you cannot do it beforehand, don’t worry, we will start the process when you come and for most local locations will have your records in just a few days.

How are my images interpreted?

All images are sent by a secure network connection to our Greenville office for interpretation by our fellowship-trained breast imaging experts, the most experienced in Eastern North Carolina.

What if you find something wrong with my screening mammogram?

Research shows that dedicated breast imaging experts are able to detect the smallest, most treatable, breast cancers with the lowest number of “false positives.” In addition, 3D mammography has been shown to lower the false positive rate even more (up to 30-50% lower). We have extensive experience with 3D mammography and have been very pleased that very few women need additional images after 3D Screening.  We expect approximately 5% (1 out of 20) women will need more imaging (usually just ultrasound).  Ultrasound and any other procedures including biopsies are done in our Greenville office which is just 30 minutes away (on the Wilson side of Greenville, right off of Highway 264.)  If you need to make the trip to Greenville for additional imaging we will usually be able to handle any additional imaging and biopsy if needed all in one visit.
