Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Invenia ABUS screening needed?
Approximately 40% of American women have dense breasts. Having dense breasts can increase a woman’s risk to develop cancer by 1-6 times. Mammography may miss cancers in dense breasts, Invenia ABUS has been proven to find 55 percent more invasive cancers after a normal or benign mammographic finding.
What are the steps in an Invenia ABUS exam?
The Invenia ABUS acquisition process uses 3D ultrasound technology to comfortably and quickly image women with dense breast tissue. Each exam takes approximately 15 minutes.
What is Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS)?
The ABUS system is safe, painless, radiation-free and non-invasive 3D ultrasound used to help improve the early detection of breast cancer. ABUS is specifically developed for whole breast imaging. Incorporating the latest state-of-the-art automated ultrasound technology, ABUS delivers uncompromised image quality increasing confidence in breast ultrasound.
Who should get Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS)?
We are recommending ABUS for any woman who has dense breast tissue as seen by their mammogram. Since it uses no radiation, it is safe to do every year with a routine screening mammogram.
Can I get Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) instead of a mammogram?
No. Mammography is the only screening tool proven to lower breast cancer mortality and remains the recommended standard screening test. There are some types of breast cancers (typically those with calcifications) that are seen best on mammography and others that can be seen better on ultrasound. ABUS is a supplemental test that is performed in addition to mammography.
I’ve had a breast ultrasound done before, how is this different?
The standard quality of automated breast ultrasound is exponentially better and more accurate than human-operated ultrasound systems used elsewhere and very powerful for assessment of the entire breast. Unlike the handheld probes used for regular ultrasounds, including pregnancy, ABUS uses a large automated probe that minimizes the chances of human error during the scan, which is often a concern with traditional ultrasounds. Unique to this system, the role of the operator is minimized so that the technologist is capable of automatically capturing accurate, consistent, exceptional images. This system is designed to image the whole breast whereas traditional ultrasound typically scans only a small area of interest.
I already get a mammogram done every year, why should I have this done?
Screening mammography, the mainstay for breast cancer detection, has known limitations in women with dense breast tissue and these women have a higher risk of breast cancer. Clinical evidence demonstrates that for women with dense breast tissue, supplementing mammograms with ABUS can substantially increase breast cancer detection. Undergoing an automated breast ultrasound can provide you with additional peace of mind by obtaining a more comprehensive, clearer picture of your breast health.
Do I need a requisition from my doctor?
Yes, a requisition is required from your healthcare provider. If you prefer to make an appointment we will contact your provider to get the necessary order.
Is it covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans cover this exam. However, since it is not designated as a routine screening exam, they may apply the payment towards your deductible and therefore there may be a cost to you. We can call your carrier to learn how much, if anything, you will have to pay. If you do not have insurance or choose not to file with insurance we offer a 50% discount for self-pay patients.
